Organization: NCH-Novato Community Hospital Position Overview: -Under the direction of the Staff Nurse II, Team Leader or Manager of Patient Care Services, the Staff Nurse II provides direct care to patients using the nursing process of assessment: planning, implementation and evaluation, so that the physical, psycho-social, safety, rehabilitative and learning needs of patients and their families are addressed. This function is performed in association with nursing peers and co-workers, attending physicians and allied support services. This position is responsible for managing care of assigned patients and directing the activities of the ancillary staff.

Med/Surg & ICU-SCU Unit: The Staff RN competently uses the nursing process, medical therapeutics, and technological and personal interventions to accomplish this. Actively participates in hospital quality assurance/improvement, risk management, clinical operations and customer service excellence.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit: The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Staff Nurse II provides direct care to surgical patients, with primary emphasis on the immediate postoperative period. The PACU Staff Nurse competently uses the nursing process, medical therapeutics, and technological and personal interventions in assuming responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. RN-Registered Nurse of California Upon Hire

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Upon Hire

ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire

NIHSS within 90 Days of hire

EXPERIENCE

This position represents the nurse with more than one year's experience.

DEPARTMENT REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Affiliate: Novato Community Hospital, Department: ICU, 2-3 years ICU experience within the last 5 years required CCRN strongly preferred
NIHSS within 90 days of hire
MAB Training within 6 months of hire

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Knowledgeable and able to use the nursing process to the benefit of patients.
Must have communication, leadership and guest-relations skills.

Demonstrated proficiency to operate all department equipment. DEPARTMENT SPECIFICE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE The staff RN position requires specific skills and knowledge of current Critical Care Nursing Standards of Practice. - Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the English language in order to effectively communicate with other health care providers and patients/families. - Must have excellent interpersonal skills in order to create a positive work environment, thus achieving optimal patient outcomes ---- Ability to perform designated high risk/high frequency technical skills required for treatment and care of the critical care patient population ---- Ability to consistently use critical thinking skills in order to adapt to situations and set priorities appropriately ---- Demonstrates proficiency to effectively operate equipment ---- Ability to perform all aspects of Basic Life Support per AHA guidelines to include: Positioning patient; placing backboard; assessing responsiveness; assessing and maintaining open airway; providing rescue breathing; assessing circulation; and performing chest compressions ---- Ability to perform all aspects of ACLS per AHA guidelines to include: - Above BLS requirements; obtaining necessary equipment/crash cart for patient on location; assisting with intubations; securing endotracheal tube; ventilating with bag-valve device; assisting with insertion of central lines; attaching EKG monitor to patient; defibrillating or cardioverting; and administering IV drugs ---- Ability to perform IV and blood therapy to include: venipuncture; hanging solutions; changing tubing; adding medications; using controller or pump and filling out all documentation according to hospital policy ---- Ability to safely assist in patient movement to include: positioning patient for treatments/assessments; positioning patient in bed; turning patient from side to side; assisting with ambulation; transferring patient to stretcher/bed, into/up to chair or bedside commode; and assisting patient to safe position if loses balance or becomes unresponsive ---- Able to initiate/maintain interventions such as gastric intubations, suction or lavage. - Must be able to monitor and empty drainage devices at all levels, including the floor, bed, above patient's head (i.e., suction canisters), and be able to insert, irrigate and maintain foley catheters ---- Ability to use monitors for EKG, pressure lines and ICP. - Includes the ability to calibrate and adjust alarm code limits, obtain cardiac output readings, and obtain recordings from bedside ---- Able to initiate code blue from bedside, move crash cart to indicated area (ICU bed, Med/Surg, and other hospital locations), assist with insertion of invasive lines (obtaining necessary equipment, preparing and positioning the patient, setting-up pressure monitoring equipment, and preparing sterile field for physician), perform care for the mechanically ventilated patient (suctioning, securing airway, using bag-valve device, assessing patient) ---- Ability to move around hospital, nursing stations and patient rooms to perform direct and indirect care ---- Ability to perform complete physical assessment, provide patient care, or assist patient in activities of daily living Job Shift: Nights Schedule: Part Time Shift Hours: 12 Days of the Week: Variable Weekend Requirements: Every other Weekend Benefits: Yes Unions: Yes Position Status: Non-Exempt Weekly Hours: 36 Employee Status: Regular Number of Openings: 1 This position may regularly work, store, prepare, receive, unpack, transport, dispose of, or administer drug(s) identified as hazardous, or potentially hazardous, by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for purposes of USP 800.
