Position

Siemens Mobility provides efficient and coordinated transportation of people and goods by rail - including rolling stock, rail automation, rail electrification, and service. We craft and manufacture across the entire spectrum of rolling stock, including commuter and regional passenger trains, light rail and streetcars, metros, locomotives, passenger coaches, and high-speed trainsets. Cities and Railroads also rely on us to provide traction-power substations and electricity transmission, as well as signaling and control technology for freight and passenger rail and transit systems.

The Mechanical System Engineer is responsible for the specification, integration, verification, and validation of rail vehicle passenger and operator heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, vehicle climatic performance, along with system(s) regulatory compliance of Siemens rail vehicles for North American customers.

The Mechanical System Engineer reports to the Mechanical System Engineering Manager in Sacramento California. The position is full-time in office.

Responsibilities

  • Completes system integration of HVAC components such as heated flooring systems, baseboard heating unitized roof and/or underframe mounted HVAC systems, thermal and acoustic insulation systems, and definition of glazing requirements as pertains to solar heat gain, and other duties as assigned.
  • Completes sophisticated material and system specifications, technical reports, and technical proposals, and follow-up to ensure accurate and effective implementation and integration.
  • Completes recommendations for sophisticated new designs, new processes, or design changes to meet requirements.
  • Performs sophisticated design, development, testing, and modifications of solutions.
  • Performs explanations and clarifies information to enable accurate interpretation and evaluation of sophisticated specifications, performance characteristics, or other technical data.
  • Performs internal and external communication of sophisticated technical and commercial issues.
  • Prepares and approves drawings as required
  • Responsible for the complete HVAC electro / mechanical / software system integration.
  • Responsible for the creation of system specifications, CDRLs, and Design Review Documentation.
  • Specify technical requirements and liaise across departments providing clarity as required.
  • Act as the technical representative and lead in customer design meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with all internal and external customers
  • Responsible to ensure that schedules are met for all deliverables and across all projects
  • Support the procurement, manufacturing, testing, and warranty cycles of the assigned system responsibilities.
  • Some travel may be required

    Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

    • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
    • Minimum of 10 years of HVAC design and integration experience
    • Sophisticated Engineering experience with projects from start to finish of the engineering, procurement, manufacturing, testing, and warranty, minimum of 10 years
    • Knowledge regarding rail vehicle industry test standards (ASTM, NFPA, FRA, APTA, ASHRAE), and fire safety compliance (CFR, and NFPA-130) are required.

      Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

      • MS degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering is preferred.
      • Rolling Stock Engineering experience and the vehicle platforms they are derived from.
      • Familiarity with relay logic, trainline and heating/cooling control schemes for light rail vehicles or similar, and fundamentals of HVAC system design and analysis is a plus.
      • Candidate must be capable of performing heating and cooling load analyses, air-balance and distribution testing, and analysis.
      • ASHRAE membership and familiarity with ASHRAE standards are a plus.

          *This job is based in Sacramento, CA. Siemens offers a variety of health and wellness benefits to employees. The base salary range in Sacramento, CA, is $132,400 - $178,600 with an annual incentive target of 10% of the base salary. The salary may be higher or lower depending on the budget and the candidate's experience, knowledge, skills, and qualifications.
